Hunchback Posture
Thoracic hyperkyphosis is when the upper back curves forward more than it should. Everyone’s spine has a natural “S” shape, but in this condition, that upper curve becomes too rounded — making a child’s posture look hunched or slouched.
You might notice your child’s shoulders rolling forward, their head sticking out a bit, or that they seem to “slouch” even when trying to stand tall. Sometimes it’s just from poor posture or too much time sitting, but in other cases, it can come from structural changes in the spine (like Scheuermann’s disease), muscle imbalances, or rapid growth during the teenage years.
Kids with hyperkyphosis may feel tightness in their chest, soreness between the shoulder blades, or stiffness when standing up straight. The good news is, with early care — including posture correction, specific exercises at Green Chiropractic— the curve can often be improved or prevented from getting worse.
