Trigeminal Neuralgia and Posture

What Green Chiropractic Looks For

Neck illustrationTrigeminal neuralgia is often described as one of the most painful conditions a person can experience, and for many patients, the search for relief eventually leads back to one overlooked area: the neck. At Green Chiropractic, the team sees people from Omaha, Elkhorn, Gretna, Bennington, and the surrounding communities who are looking for another option after medications alone haven’t given them lasting relief.

For a full overview of symptoms and treatment options, learn more about trigeminal neuralgia treatment at our practice. This post focuses on something patients rarely hear about: the connection between posture and trigeminal neuralgia.

Why Posture Is Often Overlooked

When trigeminal neuralgia flares up, the conversation usually turns straight to medication or, eventually, surgery. Those treatments have their place, and for some patients they’re appropriate. But few providers stop to ask whether a mechanical problem in the neck is placing extra stress on the nervous system in the first place.

After examining thousands of patients, our chiropractors have noticed a pattern that shows up again and again in people struggling with trigeminal neuralgia: significant postural changes.

The head sits several inches in front of the shoulders. The normal curve in the neck has disappeared. The upper back has become rounded and the shoulders roll forward. None of this happens overnight. It develops slowly, sometimes from years at a computer, an old car accident, or simply decades of looking down at a phone.

What Forward Head Posture Does to the Neck

Imagine carrying a bowling ball. Held close to the body, it’s manageable. Held with your arms stretched out in front of you, it suddenly feels much heavier. The head works the same way. When it’s balanced directly over the shoulders, the neck doesn’t have to work very hard. But when the head drifts forward, even an inch or two, the muscles, joints, discs, ligaments, and nerves in the neck are forced to work much harder every minute of every day.

That constant stress adds up, week after week and year after year, until the body starts signaling that something isn’t right. For some people that shows up as headaches. For others, it’s dizziness or numbness. For some, it’s trigeminal neuralgia.

What the Exam Looks For

At Green Chiropractic, every patient starts with a detailed consultation and examination. The doctors evaluate posture, spinal movement, and neurological findings, and take digital X-rays when appropriate to see exactly what’s happening in the cervical spine. If the exam reveals significant anterior head carriage, a lost cervical curve, or excessive rounding through the upper back, the goal becomes correcting those structural problems rather than simply managing symptoms. Care may include:

  • Specific chiropractic adjustments
  • Corrective traction
  • Postural rehabilitation
  • Home exercises and posture coaching

Every plan is built around each patient’s individual examination findings.

Considering a Structural Evaluation?

While results can never be guaranteed, many patients who work through a structural evaluation say the same thing: they stop constantly thinking about their next episode and start focusing on work, family, and everyday life again.
